Sweden Leads After First Round of 2007 Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship

U.S. 15 strokes back

Sweden fired a 12-under 201 on Tuesday to take a four-stroke lead over defending champion Norway (-8) at the 2007 Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship.  Host Japan?s 6-under was good for third place, three strokes ahead of Australia, Canada and New Zealand  (-3).


Sweden?s Jesper Kennegard fired a 6-under 65 to take the lead in the individual competition.  Anders Kristiansen of Norway and Scotland?s Michael Stewart each carded a 4-under 67 to put themselves in second place ? one stroke ahead of Swedes Bjorn Akesson and Pontus Widegren, as well as Syunnsuke Sonoda of Japan.


Mexico shot a 2-under 211 to check in at seventh.  Scotland and South Africa tied for eighth at 1-under. Argentina (+2), Chinese Taipei and the United States (+3), Singapore (+6) and Venezuela (+12) rounded out the team leaderboard.


Following the top six individual finishers were eight golfers tied for seventh ? Mauricio Azcue of Mexico, USA?s Spencer Cole, Are Friestad of Norway, South Africa?s Dylan Frittelli, Matthew Giles of Australia, Norway?s Frederik Kollevold, Takanobu Kondo of Japan and Peter Spearman-Burn of New Zealand


Spencer Cole of Team USA came in tied for seventh at 2-under.  Americans Andrew Putnam (+1), Steve Ziegler (+4) and Russell Henley (+5) finished tied for 33rd, 46th and 49th, respectively.


Round two tees off Wednesday morning with the team leaders going off last.
