Former Saginaw Valley State Coach Passes Away 

University Center, Mich. - Bob Becker, athletic director emeritus and former Saginaw Valley men's head golf coach, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19 at age 73.

 

Becker joined SVSU in 1968 as director of business and auxiliary services and served as men?s golf coach from 1969-89 and Director of Athletics from 1980-98.  During his term as AD, SVSU athletic teams won

63 GLIAC titles in 12 sports and captured 5 national championships (men?s outdoor track & field, 1982; men?s indoor track & field 1983; softball 1989; bowling, 1991 and 1997).

 

Becker?s golf teams participated in 14 NAIA national tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 1984.  He was inducted into the NAIA men?s golf Hall of Fame in 1986.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church, 2095 East U.S. Highway 23, East Tawas, MI 48730.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church or the Bob Becker Scholarship Fund, which has raised more than $78,000 in the past 12 years for the benefit of SVSU female student-athletes.
