OUT OF BOUNDS - Part Deux
with Cal Smith

DISCLAIMER:  THE GCAA AND THE WJGTC ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THIS COLUMN.  IT IS MERELY ONE PERSON'S ACCOUNT OF THE EVENT.  CAL SMITH IS SOMEWHAT OF A LOOSE CANNON AND THEREFORE HIS THOUGHTS PROBABLY SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY....OR EVEN READ AT ALL.

Well for the first time in three years, Team USA did not leave the closing ceremony of the World Junior Golf Team Championship with a trophy. The Americans struggled and fell behind on the first day and could simply never recover.

We could dwell on the misfortune the team faced here in Japan or, on the other hand, focus on the positives and things gained from this experience. As a first-person observant of the event, I can honestly say that the country could not have asked for four better representatives. All four players represented their country impecably, even when things on the course weren?t going the way they would have liked. Coming from our country, you are going to automatically hae a bullseye on your back and the guys handled the extra pressure wonderfully.

Throughout the tournament, the team maintained a positive attitude, focusing on what they could do better the next day to lower their scores and get back into contention rather than dwelling on their performances of the previous day. They all got along very well and had a good time with each other which went a long way to keeping the mood positive.  It would have taken only one negative person to ruin things for everyone, but every member of the team brought something new to the table that benefitted the team as a whole.  All in all, it was an experience that I have been thrilled to be a part of and one that none of us will ever forget.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a fairwell party to get to.  Until next time.....................uhhh........... OK, I couldn't think of anything inspiring to say.  Oh well, you get the point.
