Bracket Announced for Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship

Georgia Tech men, Duke women grab top seeds

 

NORMAN, Okla. ? The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), in association with Hooters of America, Inc., have unveiled the brackets for the 2004 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, which will be held Nov. 14-16 at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the Hills, Fla., and will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission. Georgia was named the top seed in the men's bracket while Duke nabbed the No. 1 spot in the women's field. The men's and women's tournaments will be played simultaneously with the men competing on El Campe?n and the women teeing off on Las Colinas. Invitation to the Match Play was based on 2004 national championship finish and includes both the defending men's and women's national champions.

 

Georgia Tech will face No. 16 seed Penn State in the first round of the men's tournament. The winner of the Georgia Tech-Penn State match will advance to meet the winner of Pac-10/Big Ten clash between eighth-seeded Arizona and ninth-seeded Purdue. Kentucky grabbed the fourth seed where it will face No. 13 seeded Clemson. A match-up between fifth-seeded Texas and No. 12 Pepperdine completes the top half of the bracket. Oklahoma State earned the tournament's second seed and will face defending national champion California. Florida - the event's defending champion and seventh seed - will face UCLA in the opening round. Third-seeded Georgia will face No. 14 Texas A&M while sixth-seeded Georgia State tees off against No. 11 Washington in other first-round action.

 

In the women's bracket, Duke will meet No. 16 UNLV in first-round action. Defending national champion UCLA is the fifth seed and will battle Pac-10 rival Arizona. Eight-seeded Furman faces ninth-seed Texas while fourth-seeded Washington squares off against Purdue. Oklahoma State's women's squad also earned a second seed in the tournament and faces North Carolina. Arizona State grabbed the third seed and will tee off against Texas A&M. Matches pitting sixth-seeded Tennessee against No. 11 Wake Forest and seventh-seeded New Mexico versus No. 10 Florida complete opening round action.
