Swede becomes first European Palmer Cup non-English head coach

NORMAN, Okla. ? The European Palmer Cup Selection Committee named Sweden?s Magnus Grankvist as the head coach for Team Europe for the 2004 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The eighth Palmer Cup will be played August 6-7 at Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland. The first six Palmer Cups were played between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland before expanding to all of Europe last year. Grankvist will become the first non-English European Palmer Cup head coach.

Grankvist started playing golf at the age of seven. He competed on the Swedish national team in 1983-84, turning professional the following year. During his professional golfing career, Grankvist won four events before retiring from the Swedish Tour in 1992. He went through the Swedish education system and qualified as a professional in 1994 and worked as a teaching professional until 1999. Grankvist was appointed coach for the Swedish national boys? golf team in 1998 and the men?s team in 2003. The soon to be 40-year-old is married with two daughters and lives in Lindome, Sweden.

"I?m thrilled to have been appointed as the European Team Palmer Cup Head Coach and will do anything in my power to make it a great tournament in the spirit of the game of golf," said Grankvist. "I?m hoping for a tough competition with a lot of excitement and fun."

The U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup Series, 4-2-1.
