European Palmer Cup Team Announced

NORMAN, Okla. – The European team has been announced for the 2012 Palmer Cup at The Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 28-30.

Rickard Lindberg - National Men’s Coach for the Swedish Golf Team - will serve as Europe’s coach for the second-straight year. Scotland’s David Inglis - former Palmer Cup participant and current assistant coach at Northwestern - will again serve as his assistant.

Team Europe consists of TCU’s Julien Brun, Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas, Liberty’s Robert Karlsson, Thomas Pieters of Illinois, UCLA’s Pontus Widegren, Daan Huizing of Utrecht University in the Netherlands and David Booth and Graeme Robertson of the University of Stirling in Scotland.

“This is a very strong European team with links experts that will suit this kind of course,” said Lindberg. “Top players from both college golf in the U.S. and strong successful European amateurs will team up at The Royal County Down Golf Club in late June. It’s going to be a great match and I can’t wait.”

Denmark’s Cappelen and the Swedish duo of Karlsson and Widegren also represented Europe in last year’s Palmer Cup at The Stanwich Club. Cappelen posted a 3-1 mark while Widegren went 2-2 and Karlsson 0-2-2. This will be Widegren’s third Palmer Cup. He claimed three of four matches in his first appearance in 2010.

Brun is the first French player selected to compete in the Palmer Cup while Pieters is the first Belgian. The team is also composed of players from England (Booth), the Netherlands (Huizing) and Scotland (Robertson).

The United States leads the Palmer Cup series 8-6-1 and has won two straight.
