GCAA and The First Tee Team Up in Michigan
Lansing, MI - The First Tee program held its first program of the fall in a series of one-day events with The First Tee of Mid-Michigan Sunday, October 9 at the Sycamore Learning Center, home of The First Tee of Mid-Michigan. This event brought together collegiate players and their coaches with the youngsters from The First Tee in an effort to promote involvement between college golf programs and the next generation of players in the game.
The Mid-Michigan chapter included participants between the ages of 9 and 17. A two-hour event consisted of four rotating stations that included a wellness discussion, long, short game and putting instructions for all participants. College coaches and players from Davenport University and Michigan State University conducted a question and answer session with each group as well as one-on-one instruction at each station.
“The GCAA would like to thank the Mid-Michigan Chapter of The First Tee for being such wonderful hosts to both the college players and coaches and the First Tee participants this past weekend,” said GCAA CEO Gregg Grost. “It’s always a great opportunity when we can reach out to the community and the game’s next generation of players.”
The clinic was directed by MSU Men’s Head Coach Casey Lubahn and former director of golf for TFTMM Rachel Lubahn. The youngsters learned and practiced skills in putting, chipping, full swing and wedge play through skill games like “Tic Tac Toe”, “21” and “Ready, Set, Go”. Participants also demonstrated Sportsmanship, Respect and Judgment in each session.
“I was extremely impressed with the college student-athletes and how they worked so enthusiastically and positively with our young people,” said Keith Froelich, executive director of The First Tee of Mid-Michigan. “It was a great opportunity for our TFTMM participants and a valuable experience to spend an afternoon with college players and coaches.”
"It was such a thrill for our players and coaches to see the future of the game and spend time teaching a game that has helped teach us the values we hold dear,” said Michigan State Head Coach Casey Lubahn. “We believe in the First Tee and look forward to this continuing partnership."
