Peterson Claims Division I Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway

STILLWATER, Okla. – John Peterson of LSU claimed the Division I Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway for earning medalist honors at the NCAA Championships.

Peterson found difficulty early in his first round as he was 4-over after six holes and made the turn at 6-over 42. After posting five birdies on the back nine Peterson was able to recover to 2-over par 74 and sat in 47th after the opening round.

Peterson’s second round was one of the most impressive in the history of the NCAA Championships when he posted 7-under 65. His round included six birdies and an eagle, was a Karsten Creek course record and vaulted him into the lead.

The front nine again gave difficulties to Peterson in the third and final round. He briefly dropped out of the lead after shooting 40 on his first nine holes. Four birdies on the back nine pushed Peterson back to even for the round, five-under for the tournament and back in the lead. Peterson watched a late rally from Patrick Cantlay - who birdied three of his last six holes - fall one stroke short.
