Finalists Announced for 2011 The Ben Hogan Award Presented by Baird Private Wealth Management
NORMAN, Okla. – Baird Private Wealth Management, in association with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America, has announced UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay and Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway and Peter Uihlein as finalists for the 2011 The Ben Hogan Award. The most prestigious award in men’s college golf, the Hogan is presented annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period. Tway and Uihlein also become the first college teammates to be named as finalists for the Hogan Award during the same season.
A freshman from Los Alamitos, Calif., Cantlay won the Gifford Collegiate Championship and the USC Collegiate Invitational. He also tied for medalist honors at The Amer Ari Invitational before falling in a playoff. He carded top 10 finishes in four other events. Cantlay was named Pack-10 Player of the Month for February and earned Golfweek and Golf Digest/Golf World Player of the Week honors for March 7. UCLA’s team leader in stroke average at 70.7, Cantlay is a two-time member of the Director’s Honor Roll. Last summer he advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur. Cantlay also finished as runner-up at the Southern Amateur and fourth at the SCGA Amateur.
A first-team All-Big 12 selection, Tway won the Insperity ASU Invitational after posting a career-best 64 in the opening round. He also finished second in his last two starts at The Aggie Invitational and The Big 12 Championship. Tway has posted a total of five top-five finishes and nine top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments. Only once did he finish outside of the top 20 when he placed tied for 23rd at the Puerto Rico Classic. Tway won the Players Amateur and was runner-up at the Trans-Miss Amateur. The senior from Edmond, Okla., also advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur.
The reigning U.S. Amateur Champion, Uihlein also won the Sahalee Players Championship and Dixie Amateur. He also captured top-10 finishes at the Sunnehanna Amateur, Porter Cup and World Team Amateur. A junior from Orlando, Fla., Uihlein was runner-up at the 2010 NCAA Championships. He was recently named the Big 12 Player of the Year and was Big 12 Golfer of the Month for September. Uihlein has claimed medalist honors twice this season - the season opening OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational and The Aggie Invitational. He has posted four other top-five finishes this season with only one finish outside the top 20.
