  • GCAA Summer Series: Gutierrez takes command of the leaderboard after 36 holes

On another dreary morning in Monterey Bay, it was a fight for par for every player at Bayonet. The course scoring average on Tuesday was 78.35.

Nevertheless, there were several players who were able to put their mark on the scoreboard.

Randall Fojtasek from the University of Texas, after carding an 83 yesterday, went out in the second group in round two and fired a 1-under 71 with five birdies, jumping into the top ten on the leaderboard. Fojtasek will tee off at 8:20am Wednesday morning currently at 10-over par.

The first-round leaders, Long Beach State’s Andrew Hoekstra and Santa Clara’s Alejandro Gutierrez, grinded through tough day two rounds. Hoekstra birdied the par-5 first to take an early lead, but proceeded to go five over through the following 17 holes to finish with a 4-over 76 and drop into a tie for second with University of California, Berkeley’s James Song.

Song began the second round tied for third at 2-over par. Paired with Hoekstra and Gutierrez in the final group, the rising senior golden bear had one of the steadiest rounds on Tuesday, with birdies on 3, 8, 12 and 18 and four complimentary bogeys to finish with an even-par 70.

“I think I just played a lot more disciplined today,” Song explained after his round. “I just stayed patient out there . . . Didn’t really make any mistakes. Hit the ball a little bit better, and ya just kind of played a good round.”

Song and Hoekstra would enter the clubhouse two shots behind Alejandro Gutierrez, who followed up his 2-under 70 on Monday with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday.

After a two over front nine without a single birdie, Gutierrez drained back-to-back 20-foot putts for par and birdie respectively to get back to one over. With bogeys on 14 and 15, he entered the par-3 17th tied with Hoekstra for the lead. Gutierrez managed to hit the back level with the pin off the tee and sink the 17-footer to go one up on Hoekstra and eventually two shots on both Hoekstra and Song.

The trio will tee off at 8:50am on hole one Wednesday morning.
