Olander Named European Coach for Palmer Cup presented by Monster
Swede to lead Europe at Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links June 26-27


NORMAN, Okla.  ?  M?rten Olander of Sweden has been named coach of the European team for the Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-27 on the 6,903 yard, par 71 Willie Park Junior designed Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links when the top collegiate players from the United States tee off against their counterparts from Europe. The Americans lead the series, 6-4-1, but have lost the last two competitions in Europe.

    Olander, whose professional career included eight years on the European Tour, has a very successful background as a college golfer. While competing at Alabama In 1993, Olander won the Ben Hogan Award, which at that time was awarded to the top student-golfer in college golf. Highlights in his professional career include a second-place finish in the Madrid Open in 2003, two Open Championships and a European Tour record for most consecutive birdies during a round with eight in the 2002 French Open.

    ?I feel honored and excited to be selected as captain of the European team for this year?s Palmer Cup,? said Olander. ?I look forward to coaching the future stars of professional golf at a superb venue in the homeland of golf. I am sure the match will be a tough contest, but my goal is obviously that we will be victorious and win the Cup. My experience as a professional and collegiate golfer will be a resource for the European side in this competition.?

    The first Palmer Cup was held in Bay Hill in 1997 and has been staged at some of the most prestigious clubs in the world.  Previous Palmer Cup host venues include St. Andrews Old and New Courses, The Honors Course, Royal Liverpool, Baltusrol, Doonbeg, Cassique, Ballybunion, Whistling Straits, Prestwick Golf Club and Caves Valley. Past participants include Open Champion Ben Curtis, Jonathan Byrd, Luke Donald, Charles Howell III, Bo Van Pelt, Michael Hoey, Matt Kuchar, Peter Lawrie, Hunter Mahan, D.J. Trahan, Ryan Moore, J.B. Holmes and Gonzalo Fdez.-Casta?o.
