Finalists Named for Hogan Award
Award Barnes, Haas, Mahan, Moore and Trahan vie for college golf's top award
 

NORMAN, Okla. ? Bank of America in cooperation with The Friends of Golf (FOG), Colonial Country Club and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), has announced the five finalist for the 2003 Ben Hogan Award. The Hogan is presented annually to the top men?s NCAA Division I, II or III or NAIA golfer, taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months. Finalists include Ricky Barnes of Arizona, Wake Forest's Bill Haas, Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore of UNLV and Clemson's D.J. Trahan.

Barnes, a senior from Stockton, Calif., is the reigning U.S. Amateur champion and had the highest finish of all amateurs at the 2003 Masters. He has five top-three finishes in nine stroke-play collegiate events this season and placed 18th as an amateur at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson. Barnes teamed with fellow Hogan Award finalists Mahan and Trahan to lead the United States to victory at the 2002 World Amateur Golf Championship. The champion of last season's NCAA West Regional, Barnes earned top-10 finishes at both the Northeast Amateur (tied for second) and the Players Amateur (tied for eighth). Barnes has earned PING All-America honors twice.

A junior from Greer, S.C., Haas was a first-team PING All-America selection last season and earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman. A two-time All-ACC performer and 2001 ACC freshman of the year, Haas has won medallist honors in three tournaments this season. Haas finished second at this season's ACC Championships and claimed the championship at the Players Amateur. Haas also advanced to the semifinals of the Western Amateur and the quarterfinals of the Porter Cup.

Mahan, a PING First-Team All-American last season and second-team selection as a freshman, was runner-up at the U.S. Amateur and placed third at the NCAA Championships and the Sunnehanna Amateur. The inaugural recipient of the Southern Golf Association?s National Amateur of the Month and Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Month for March, Mahan has twice been named to the Palmer Cup team. The McKinney, Texas, junior was named Big 12 Player of the Year and was named to the U.S. World Amateur Team in 2002. Mahan made the cut at The Masters Tournament.

Named the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and a PING Honorable Mention All-America selection last season, Moore has claimed four top-five finishes this season, including medallist honors at the Toyota Men?s Collegiate Championship. The Puyallup, Wash., native won the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship and made the cut at this year's Masters. Moore tied for eight at last season's NCAA Championships.

The reigning Hogan Award recipient, Trahan was also named ACC Player of the Year, Jack Nicklaus Award Winner, Carolinas Golf Association Player of the Year and a first-team PING All-American. In addition, Trahan was named to the ACC 50-Year Anniversary Golf Team. This past summer, the senior from Inman, S.C., claimed titles at the Monroe Invitational and the South Carolina Amateur in addition to top-10 finishes at the Sunnehanna Amateur (tied for third) and the Azalea Amateur (tied for eighth). Over the past year, Trahan has finished in the top 10 in eight collegiate tournaments, including medallist honors at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate.

The winner of the Hogan Award will be announced on May 9 and the presentation banquet will be held at Colonial Country Club on May 19, the Monday prior to the Bank of America Colonial.
