America Takes Lead in USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship
U.S. surges past Japan, 21-15

SANO, Japan ? The United States won seven of 12 singles matches and halved two others to surge ahead of Japan and take a 21-15 lead after the second round of the USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship at Verde Sano Country Club in Sano, Japan. The Americans would need to earn 10 points in Friday?s third round for a three-day total of 31 to claim the championship.

Team USA once again got off to a quick start, winning the first two matches of the round for their first lead since early in the first round. Jessica Reese downed Mao Kouyama, 74-77, and Charlotte Mayorkas beat Tomoko Kanai, 72-75. Liz Janangelo and Hitomi Matsumura halved the following match, 76-76. Japan responded by winning the next three matches. Noriko Yasuda came from behind to defeat Leigh Anne Hardin on the matches final hole, 73-74, and Haruo Fujishima held off a late J.J. Jakovac comeback attempt, 73-72, to regain the lead for Japan. Toyokazu Fujishima fired the round?s lowest total against Tom Johnson, winning 67-71. The U.S. rallied with four-consecutive victories. Jay Mundy, Andrew Dahl and Jack Ferguson each won by a stroke while Ryan Quinn and Matt Hendrix won by six and four strokes, respectively. Steve Conway and Shintaro Kai halved the final match of the round.

Friday?s third round will also consist of 12 singles matches. The first tee time is slated for 8 a.m.

The U.S. team leads the series, 20-7, and has won seven straight tournaments.
